97 percent is Roman Catholic. The remaining population is composed of about 575,000 members of the Russian Orthodox faith, 267,000 Protestants, 80,000 Old Catholics, 5,200 Muslims and 5,000 Jews. Throughout the country there are more than 12,500 churches.

Of the total population of 38.7 million, 300,000-500,000 are German, 300,000 Ukrainian, 200,000 Belarussians, with Slovaks, Sintis, Romas, Lithuanians, Czechs, Greeks and Macedonians making up the remainder. Average population density was calculated in 1992 at around 122.9 people per sq.km (318.3 per sq.mile). About 9.5 million people of Polish descent live abroad, the majority of them in the USA (about 7 million), but over a million live in the former Soviet Union and about the same number in Germany. Large Polish communities also live in France, Canada and Brazil.

Polish zloty (= zl). which is divided into 100 groszy (= gr). In 1995 Poland introduced new bank notes. The five new notes (for 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 zloty) come in different sizes and are easily recognizable. The nine coins are as follows: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 groszy and 1, 2 and 5 zloty.
